Cybersecurity Career Opportunities

As the field of cybersecurity grows, so do opportunities within the cybersecurity industry. As the fastest growing industry in the nation, the demand for cybersecurity professionals greatly outpaces the supply. This makes a cybersecurity career an extremely desirable one — one that many tech job seekers and career changers elect to pursue.

In the past the field primary was made up of experienced IT professionals, who with the proper training, degree and skills, could potentially transition into cybersecurity positions. However, as more colleges, institutions and even organizations embrace cybersecurity training, new candidates continue to emerge in this growing job market.

The global marketplace is a cyber-centric one, driven by wireless devices and supported by complex networks. Increasingly, the facets of our daily life, both in and out of the workplace, occur within a digital domain. With this increased interaction comes a greater chance for cyber attacks and in turn has sent organizations, both small and large, into a hiring frenzy.

In 2015 alone, the average cost of a cybersecurity breach was $3.8 million, a 23 percent increase over 2013.

Businesses know the risk, see the importance, and are actively recruiting top talent to help navigate its daily operations through the unpredictable waters of cyberspace.

However, the demand for cybersecurity professionals is at an all-time high, and growing exponentially, yet qualified and credentialed applicants to fulfill these roles are in very short supply. To the cybersecurity job seeker with the right training, the right degree and the right experience — there is potentially an endless amount of opportunity for upward career advancement.

The Benefits of a Cybersecurity Career

A career in cybersecurity yields high pay with lower starting salaries beginning in the $50,000 range, and experienced professionals can earn nearly double that amount at $100,00 annually.

Flexibility is another advantage of working in cybersecurity industry. Since most cybersecurity professionals migrate into the field from other IT positions, they tend to have a broad range of knowledge and skills and can shift into different positions with relative ease.

Among the largest cybersecurity employers are the government, military/defense, financial institutions, high-tech companies, educational institutions, and insurance companies, all of which generally offer generous benefit packages to employees.

Cybersecurity Skills and Job Requirements

The ideal cybersecurity job candidate has at least a bachelor’s degree, professional certifications, and work experience, the latter of which includes advanced skills related to his or her cybersecurity or IT specialty. The soft skills most often required by employers, and often overlooked by cybersecurity career advancers, include the following.

  • Attention to detail
  • Mathematical ability
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Curiosity
  • Creativity
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Works well under stress/pressure

While technical expertise in cybersecurity is essential, soft skills like the ones listed above can be best obtained and finessed through the pursuit of a master’s degree or other form of continued education. Most cybersecurity master’s programs place a great deal emphasis on leadership, management, and communication, in addition to the enhancement and refinement of technical capabilities. Graduates of these programs are well suited to land high paying cybersecurity jobs.
